SUPER MONDAY
A motivational and informational morning message from Superintendent Willis
Week 28 ~ March 3rd, 2025
Super Monday Message
One year and one week from now we will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first telephone call. On March 10, 1876 history was made in a small workshop in Boston. The first words spoken over a phone were, “Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you.” It’s now possible to talk to almost anyone, anywhere, anytime. The invention of the telephone revolutionized human communication.
The man that spoke those first words was Alexander Graham Bell, a Scottish-born inventor and teacher of the deaf. For years, Bell had been experimenting with ways to transmit voice over electrical wires. He had been working alongside his assistant, Thomas Watson, and they had been tirelessly testing various contraptions hoping to create a device that could carry sound in real-time.
On the fateful day of the first telephone call, Bell and Watson were conducting another experiment. Bell was in one room, and Watson was in another, both connected by a wire running between their devices. Bell accidentally spilled battery acid on himself and called out to Watson with the famous words, “Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you.”. Unbeknownst to him, his voice traveled through the wire and reached Watson’s receiver in the other room.
Hearing Bell’s words clearly, Watson rushed into the room with Bell. Their experiment had worked! For the first time in history, a human voice had been transmitted electrically, proving that long-distance speech was possible.
The telephone went on to completely change the way the world communicates and has made a permanent mark on history. We have evidence of many battles being fought after treaties were signed because communication was too slow. The telephone would dramatically change the speed and reach of communication.
Like most great inventions, phones can be used for good and for bad. We use our devices to reach out to those in need with no worries of geographic distances and contribute our efforts to distant noble causes. We also use our devices to waste valuable time and become distracted from important goals. Focus this week on using our powerful tools of communication to reach someone you wouldn’t be able to reach otherwise and make a difference for them. Have the best Week 28.
Super High Fives
Just a couple of the awesome recent accomplishments that need a big thank you.
- A super high five to all of our winter sports teams, their coaches, and their fans. It was a fun sports season and we’re proud of how they represented Piute County.
- A super high five to Central Utah Educational Services (CUES) for providing a host of great services for us. From portable educational tools like the planetarium, to the Special Education testing, to technology device repairs, they have been a great resource for our schools and we appreciate their support.
