SUPER MONDAY
A motivational and informational morning message from Superintendent Willis
Week 18 ~ December 9th, 2024
Super Monday Message
The Micronesia islands are located north of Australia. There are over 2,000 small islands in that tropical region of the world. The islands belong to a variety of nations. Many of the islands belong to a commonwealth of the United States or the United States Territory of Guam. The small island nations do not have many modern conveniences. 72 years ago there were very few of those islands that had any reliable electricity or running water.
In December of 1952 a United States Air Force Superfortress B-29 was flying low over some of these more remote islands when the crew saw groups of people on the beach. The crew likely knew these people had very little and they were filled with holiday spirit. The crew ran around the large plane gathering up anything they could find that they thought they could spare and would be useful to the people. They put all of the items in some containers and attached them to a parachute.
The massive Air Force bomber made another pass of the beach and the crew dropped their hastily created package. Many of the items ended up scattered around in the water just off shore and the crew watched as the people swam out to collect them. It was a small token of holiday spirit that made the crew feel good and made some islanders very happy. The crew couldn’t have known how their actions would influence others.
When the crew told the story of their charity, others wanted to participate and do something similar. The next December in 1953 another drop was made, this one more organized and with well prepared boxes of supplies. Again, the crews felt great about what they had done and the help they had provided. As they told their stories, more people wanted to participate.
As the years went by members of the Air Force and locals in Guam started making more and more contributions to the boxes that were dropped in the remote islands each December. In 2006, the Air Force dropped 140 boxes of supplies and gifts on over 50 islands. Annual charity runs, auctions, and sales were created to supply the boxes each holiday season.
After over 60 years of dropping humanitarian supplies in these remote islands, other nations wanted to join in the event. In 2015, the Air Force equivalent for Japan and Australia joined in the distribution of supplies. Since then several other countries including Korea and Canada have joined the annual event.
The event has become known as “Operation Christmas Drop” and is the longest running humanitarian effort of the United States Air Force. The 2024 event started last Wednesday on December 4th and has delivered supplies and food to nearly 60 remote islands. Small acts of kindness can turn into large scale acts of kindness that multiply for generations. Have a great week 18 and a great holiday season.
